How To Keep Your Life On Track After Weight Loss Surgery

Updated: Jul 13, 2020

The first year after your weight loss surgery will likely see some dramatic changes. Most patients will experience their biggest weight losses within the first year, and will continue benefiting from the surgery if they stick to the doctor’s instructions. So, how do you keep your life on track after such a dramatic surgery?

If you’ve had bariatric surgery, one of the biggest fears you’ve experienced is probably that you’ll regain the original weight. Unfortunately for many, that does happen. People will often begin to regain weight around 12 to 18 months after the operation, for a number of reasons. However, majority of the time, the weight is regained because of dietary reasons.

One of the key factors of weight loss surgery to keep in mind is that the surgery is not a quick-fix weight loss solution. If you choose to undergo bariatric surgery, you need to commit to a lifelong change for a healthier lifestyle.

In the first year after surgery, most people are relatively careful with their diet and exercise. They will stick to their portion sizes and begin their new lives with determination. However, as they start to tolerate a wider variety of foods, many begin to eat more and exercise less. Their weight loss slows down and plateaus before they start to regain the original weight back on.

If you don’t want this to be you, you need to put into practice long term and sustainable eating habits. Research from CCS gastric sleeve Newcastle has shown that these eating behaviours are largely responsible for regaining weight after weight loss surgery:

· Binge eating

· Eating when feeling full

· Snacking throughout the day

· Out of control eating

· Eating fast foods

So how can you keep your life on track after weight loss surgery?

By gaining control of your eating habits, and maintaining them.

Here are some further tips for maintaining weight loss after bariatric surgery:

· Recognise that obesity is a chronic condition that forces your body to gain weight. You have a full team of dieticians, physicians, psychologists and a surgeon to back you up on the journey to fight obesity

· Schedule regular visits with your weight loss clinic to keep your progress on track

· Follow the recommended nutrition plan diligently to ensure you are getting enough nutrition

· Avoid snacking or grazing

· Continue regular exercise, with others if you need the support

· Meal prep small portions

· Seek support if needed
